Welcome to another week at Classical KING, where we bring you the best in classical music, both from our local community and from the world’s most prestigious stages. Here’s what we have lined up for you this week.

Festal – Irish Festival Seattle 

March 13–16, 2025 

 Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall 

 Classical KING is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a special musical focus on Irish composers. In partnership with Seattle Center’s Festál series and the Irish Festival Seattle, we are highlighting performances, cultural exhibits, and a range of festivities that bring Irish traditions to life. The festival is free and open to the public, making it a fantastic way to experience the music and culture of Ireland in Seattle.

Northwest Focus Concert Calendar 

Seattle Classic Guitar Society: Music for Voice & Guitar 

Saturday, March 15 | 2:00 PM 

 The Chapel at the Good Shepherd Center, Seattle 

 Guitarist Tamara Caulkins and mezzo-soprano Melissa Schiel present an afternoon of classical music by Fernando Sor, one of Spain’s most renowned composers and guitarists. Known for his elegant compositions and expressive melodies, Sor’s music is a cornerstone of the classical guitar repertoire. This performance offers a rare opportunity to hear his vocal works in a historic and intimate venue. 

Music of Remembrance: Identity 

Sunday, March 16 | 5:00 PM 

 Benaroya Hall, Seattle 

 Music of Remembrance presents a thought-provoking program exploring themes of cultural identity and resilience through chamber music. Featuring works by composers Rhiannon Giddens, Carlos Simon, and Jessie Montgomery, this program showcases a fusion of musical traditions and contemporary storytelling. The concert also includes a world-premiere dance performance by Donald Byrd of Spectrum Dance Theater and a new chamber work by Portuguese composer Luis Tinoco. 

This Light of Mine: Art Songs by Women Composers 

Friday, March 14 | 7:30 PM 

 St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, Seattle 

 Soprano Stacey Mastrian and pianist Wade Dingman present a recital featuring art songs by women composers from different eras and backgrounds. This program highlights the beauty and depth of compositions that have historically been underrepresented in classical music. Experience a range of emotions and stories through this thoughtfully curated selection of pieces.

Northwest Focus LIVE: Tembembe Ensamble Continuo 

Friday, March 14 | 7:00 PM 

 Hosted by Sean MacLean 

Classical KING is thrilled to welcome Tembembe Ensamble Continuo to the Northwest Focus LIVE studio. This dynamic group, visiting from Mexico as part of Early Music Seattle’s Beyond Baroque festival, specializes in the vibrant sounds of 17th- and 18th-century Mexican and Latin American music. Their performances recreate the energy and spirit of the Fandango tradition, blending historic and folk influences in a lively musical experience. 

Metropolitan Opera Broadcast: Beethoven’s Fidelio 

Saturday, March 15 | 10:00 AM 

 Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, is a powerful story of love, heroism, and political resistance. Set in Seville during the late 18th century, the opera follows Leonore, who disguises herself as a prison guard named Fidelio to rescue her unjustly imprisoned husband, Florestan. This timeless tale of courage and justice is performed by an extraordinary cast and brought to you live from the Met Opera stage.

The Score with Edmund Stone 

The Emerald Isle 

Saturday, March 15 | 4:00 PM 

This week, The Score celebrates Ireland’s rich cinematic and musical heritage. Host Edmund Stone explores the evocative film scores that bring the culture and landscapes of Ireland to life, featuring selections from The Quiet Man, Far and Away, Waking Ned Devine, Going My Way, and more. Whether you have Irish roots or simply appreciate a good film score, this program offers a wonderful mix of storytelling and music. 

Treasure Quest 

Sunday, March 16 | 4:00 PM 

Embark on a journey of discovery and adventure with The Score. This episode features music from films centered around treasure hunts, mysteries, and legendary quests, including National Treasure, Tomb Raider, Treasure Island, and Indiana Jones. Expect thrilling orchestral scores that bring the excitement of discovery to life. 

Second Inversion: Luck of the Irish 

Saturday, March 15 | 9:00 PM 

Join host Maggie Molloy for a special edition of Second Inversion celebrating Ireland’s musical legacy. This program highlights the influence of traditional Irish music on contemporary composers, featuring works inspired by the rolling hills and bustling pubs of the Emerald Isle. Whether you’re familiar with the genre or exploring it for the first time, this episode offers a fresh perspective on the timeless beauty of Irish folk traditions.
